Design Engineer II

Position Overview

The Design Engineer II is responsible for lead freeze-cast mold engineering and providing new tooling in a cost effective and timely manner. The incumbent proposes and executes improved approaches to mold design. This position is also responsible for managing tooling supplier relationships and growing the supplier base. Additionally, this position is responsible for growing in-house capabilities and resources. This person is also responsible for proposing and justifying equipment and/or personnel upgrades as applicable, including mentoring junior mold design/tooling engineers

Duties and Responsibilities

Part Quoting

  • Determine and document engineering information required for quotes (cost, mold quantity, part weight, lead time, etc.). Route quotes to operations and support operations quoting activities as required. Communicate concerns with Director of Eng. & QA
  • Use available resources (Sales, Application Eng, Customer, etc.) as appropriate to complete quote package when information is missing

Mold Engineering & Procurement

  • Create mold design based on budgetary and schedule requirements. Consider existing design benefits and shortcomings, and manufacturing requirements (ease of use, robustness/durability, etc.). Leverage process engineering in design review/ECO, and others as appropriate based on nature and complexity of project
  • Conduct design reviews as needed based on part/mold complexity and/or as requested
  • Select vendor(s) based on budgetary, schedule and quality performance.
  • Track vendor progress to schedule – communicate schedule and/or cost risks to Director Eng. & QA. Maintain documentation of schedule and cost throughout
  • Ensure completion of receiving inspection, document and address any non-conformances
  • Hand off to and/or collaborate with process engineering for TIR completion based on mold complexity
  • Improve vendor base to enhance competitiveness of Blasch vendor costs and lead times while maintaining or improving quality

Equipment Engineering

  • Design and execution of fixturing and ancillary equipment in support of mold systems, product families, special projects, etc.
  • Design and detail capital equipment and machinery as required
  • Source and support installation of capital equipment and machinery as required

All other tasks as assigned by the manager.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, on some instances this job may require work in areas where ear protection is necessary.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Science or equivalent experience
  • 5 years’ experience in an applicable engineering field.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design

Blasch Precision Ceramics is located in Albany, NY, and produces precision refractory and specialty ceramic shapes for use in many industrial markets.
