Design Engineer I

 

Position Overview

  • Designs and support set-up of molds for ceramic injection molding and plaster casting (65%)
  • Facilities and equipment design (10%)
  • Develop manufacturing processes for molds designed (10%)
  • Support for Process Engineering and Quality (15%)

Duties and Responsibilities

Mold Engineering

  • Create mold design based on budgetary and schedule requirements. Consider existing design benefits and shortcomings, and manufacturing requirements (ease of use, robustness/durability, etc.). Work under the guidance of the Senior Design Engineer. Leverage process engineering design for manufacturability.
  • Conduct design reviews as needed based on part/mold complexity and/or as requested
  • Propose vendor(s) based on budgetary, schedule and quality performance, working with Senior Design Engineer.
  • Support Senior Design Engineer in communicating with vendors and tracking vendor progress to schedule – communicate schedule and/or cost risks to Director Eng. & QA.
  • Ensure completion of receiving inspection, communicating non-conformances
  • Provide mold setup instruction and troubleshoot assembly issues
  • Hand off and/or collaborate with process engineer to ensure molds perform as expected

Process Engineering

  • Design gauges, process control equipment, etc.
  • Design and execution of fixturing and ancillary equipment in support of mold systems, product families, special projects, etc.
  • Design of capital equipment and machinery
  • Sourcing and installation support of capital equipment and machinery
  • Assist in process improvement and Quality projects
  • Assist in process establishment and documentation

All other tasks as assigned by the manager.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, on some instances this job may require work in areas where ear protection is necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. The manufacturing plant is open 24 x 7; Sunday – Friday. Typical office hours are Monday through Friday; 8 hours/day, typically 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Science or equivalent experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience in an applicable engineering field.


Reports to – Director of Engineering and QA, working under the guidance of Senior Design Engineer

Salary – $60,000 – 70,000

Blasch Precision Ceramics is located in Albany, NY, and produces unique precision refractory and ceramic shapes for many industrial markets. Blasch has proprietary processes which enable the manufacture of complex shapes not possible with other ceramic forming technologies.
