Materials Laboratory Technician
Duties and Responsibilities
• Conduct scientific experiments under defined conditions
• Accurately complete material property measurements
• Document and report information by maintaining periodic logs and equipment record books
• Support equipment operation by following operating instructions, maintaining supplies, and performing preventive maintenance
• Enter data pertaining to incoming and in-use materials in databases
• Troubleshoot equipment failures
• Sustain laboratory cleanliness
• All other tasks as assigned by the manager

Skills
• Experience using physical measuring equipment (e.g. scales, rulers, thermometers)
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and SQL database systems
• Excellent technical verbal and written communication skills
• Familiarity with safety regulations and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Ability to work with potentially dangerous substances (flammability, chemical and health hazards) effectively, minimizing possibility of a hazardous incident occurring
• Capable of working autonomously

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional lab environment. This role routinely makes use of lab equipment such as weighing scales, digital gauges, electric kilns, industrial mixers, vacuum pumps, and other lab-based equipment.
This role will additionally make use of standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smart phones.

This job operates in a professional lab environment. This role routinely uses lab equipment such as computers, electronic measuring devices, electric kilns, industrial mixers, vibrating tables, other lab instruments, as well as office equipment such as laptop computers, and phones.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, in some instances this job may require work in areas where ear protection is necessary.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. The manufacturing plant is open 24 x 7; Sunday – Friday. Typical office hours are Monday through Friday; 8 hours/day, typically 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum; high school education or equivalent.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a S.T.E.A.M. field or equivalent experience.
Reports to Materials Engineering Manager
Wage - $20-24/hour
Blasch Precision Ceramics is located in Albany, NY, and produces unique precision refractory and ceramic shapes for many industrial markets. Blasch has proprietary processes which enable the manufacture of complex shapes not possible with other ceramic forming technologies.
