Metal Ferrules for Boiler Tube and Tubesheet Protection
Blasch Precision Ceramics manufactures metal ferrules for boiler tubes and tubesheet protection in high-temperature alloys selected for strength, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance. Metal ferrules provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for protecting critical tube inlet and tubesheet areas in waste heat boilers, process gas coolers, and other high-temperature heat recovery equipment.
Boiler tube failures frequently originate at the tube inlet, weld, or tubesheet area, where components can be exposed to elevated temperatures, thermal cycling, vibration, corrosion, and erosion. In applications operating below approximately 1,650°F (900°C), metal ferrules can provide effective protection without the additional cost or complexity of a ceramic ferrule.

Protecting Critical Boiler Tube Areas
Metal boiler tube ferrules are installed at the tube inlet to protect the tube end and tubesheet from the effects of high-temperature process gases. The ferrule extends into the tube and can be flared to match the tube ID, creating a smooth transition for process flow while helping protect the tube and weld area.
In addition to providing mechanical protection, metal ferrules can help:
- Reduce erosion and corrosion at the tube inlet
- Protect tube-to-tubesheet welds
- Shield the tubesheet from high-temperature process gases
- Improve process gas flow into the boiler tubes
- Reduce localized thermal stresses
- Extend component service life in demanding operating environments
Custom Metal Ferrule Designs
Blasch manufactures metal ferrules to meet the specific requirements of each boiler and process application. Ferrule geometry can be customized to accommodate tube dimensions, installation requirements, process conditions, and required levels of protection.
Available configurations can include:
- Flared or tapered inlets and outlets
- Flanges
- Slots and holes
- Stop pins
- Custom OD and ID dimensions
- Ceramic heads for additional tubesheet protection
- Ceramic fiber insulation around the ferrule OD
Ceramic fiber can be applied around the outside diameter of the ferrule to provide insulation and help prevent metal-to-metal contact between the ferrule and surrounding components.
Metal vs. Ceramic Ferrules
The appropriate ferrule material depends on operating temperature, process chemistry, gas velocity, erosion potential, thermal cycling, and required service life.
Metal ferrules are well suited for moderate-temperature applications where mechanical strength, cost effectiveness, and ease of installation are important. For more severe high-temperature or abrasive environments, ceramic ferrules can provide superior resistance to thermal shock, corrosion, and erosion.
Blasch can help evaluate the operating conditions and determine whether a metal, ceramic, or hybrid metal-and-ceramic ferrule design is the best solution for your application.
High-Temperature Ferrule Solutions
Every boiler and process gas application presents different operating conditions. Blasch combines materials expertise, engineering support, and custom manufacturing capabilities to develop ferrule designs that address specific tube, tubesheet, and process requirements.
For applications approaching or exceeding the temperature limits of metal ferrules, Blasch also manufactures high-temperature ceramic ferrules and tubesheet protection components in advanced refractory materials.
